Ferdinando Baratti and Edoardo Milano, opened a small shop in Via di Dora Grossa (now Via  Garibaldi) in 1858. In 1875, they moved to the Galleria Subalpina and, for the Universal
Exhibition of 1911, expanded it with the café under the arcades of Piazza Castello. A gem of the Liberty style, it is the work of the architect Casanova and, for the bronze bas-reliefs, of the sculptor Rubino. Both the exteriors and interiors have a stunning wealth of decoration, with inlaid marble, stuccoes, lacquers, rare fabrics and mahogany furnishings. Much loved by Mascagni and by Gozzano,
who composed a rhyming poem here “Le golose” on women and sweet delicacies.
