Café Pedrocchi

Caffè Pedrocchi

Dal 1831

The stunning creation of Antonio Pedrocchi and of the Venetian
architect Jappelli, it has all the majesty of a temple, with its
magical Greek, Roman, Herculanean, Renaissance, Moorish,
Egyptian, and Rossini rooms. The Museum of the Risorgimento
is in the very rooms, opened in 1842 next to the piano nobile,
where patriot-students used to assemble. Berti, Crescini and
Stefani launched the satirical and patriotic Caffè Pedrocchi weekly
here in 1845. All the Savoys came here, as did Carducci, Giacosa,
and Eleonora Duse. Neoclassical, with the ‘Pedrocchino’ in neo-
Gothic, it is the political, academic and journalistic centre and
the promoter of an intense cultural programme.
