Founded in 1850 in Palazzolo sull’Oglio by the Balzer family, who were originally from Lichtenstein, it moved in 1936 to the arcades of the “Sentierone”. It has been the salon of Bergamo and the must-place to go when on a Sunday stroll ever since. Callas, Mastroianni and Gassman made it the venue for artists from the Teatro Donizetti across the road. Exquisitely restored in 2014, including the lovely banqueting hall on the first floor, it is still upholding the fine traditions of the pastries that made it famous, with its “Donizetti”, “Polenta e osei” and brioches, kranz, Veneziane and Swiss rolls, and its legendary ice creams.
