One of the oldest hotels in Italy. When it was still a tavern in the thirteenth century, the Doges of Venice would stop on their way to hunt wild boar on the Lido. Mentioned in the chronicles
of every century, in his ‘Curiosità veneziane’ of 1863, Tassini
recalls that in 1398 the innkeeper of the ‘Cavaletum’ used wine
vases that were smaller than standard. It was renovated in the
nineteenth century, when the Bacino Orseolo was created. In
the inter-war period, Marquise Casati and the Duke of Abruzzi
held court for the intelligentsia. Illustrious guests have included Richard Strauss, Hermann Hesse a number of times, Ugo Ojetti, Ettore Ximenes and Winston Churchill.
