Guests include Margherita of Savoy in 1883, King Vittorio Emanuele III, the Empress of Austria in 1889, Hélène of Aosta in 1905, King Gustav of Sweden in 1930, Verdi, and Marconi. Requisitioned by the Americans as a rest camp in 1944-45, it gave hospitality to General Clark, head of the US Fifth Army. Loved by Pavarotti, Bocelli and Dalla, who here wrote his famous Caruso, the suite where Caruso spent his last few months remains intact. Sophisticated, elegant and perched like a fortress above the sea, it maintains its nineteenth-century aura and a Liberty-style winter garden.
