The film festival first saw the light in its garden in 1932, with no
jury and no prizes: 40 films chosen by the production companies,
in their original languages, with permission from Mussolini!
The Lumière brothers, the Prince of Piedmont, Maria José, Fascist officials and femmes fatales were all in the audience. A splendid, monumental mix of an eclectic neo-Moresque and Art Deco,
with dream-world suites, tennis courts and pools, its guests include Marconi, Edward VII, Mata Hari, Vittorio Emanuele III, and the journalist Elsa Maxwell, terror of the stars. Churchill went to the beach here.
