Overlooking Lake Como and just next to the sumptuous Villa Carlotta, in an authentic “Liberty” Art Nouveau style, the hotel was originally a luxurious stop on the Grand Tour. Here the cream of European aristocracy were introduced to the world of Italian culture. The Grand Hotel contains the suite dedicated to the divine Greta Garbo, who stayed here and recalled it as a sunny, happy place in the film Grand Hotel in 1932. Meticulous restoration has returned the fairy-tale halls and their precious furnishings to their former glory, with a floating swimming pool on the lake and an award-winning spa in the eighteenth-century Villa Emilia. The Grand Hotel includes Villa Sola Cabiati in Tremezzo and Villa Passalacqua in Moltrasio, which has hosted such illustrious personalities as Napoleon, Vincenzo Bellini, and Winston Churchill.
