A “hotel with stabling” just by Porta Palazzo – Europe’s largest open-air food market – it became a centre for traders and travellers in 1830 when the new bridge was built over the nearby Dora. From 1869 it became even more popular, with the opening of the Torino Porta Milano station, which remained as the rail terminus for the Turin-Ceres line until 1988. A hothouse of culture, it takes its guests on a journey back in time, with original early-twentieth-century deal floors, wainscoting, spherical lamps, pier mirrors, tables, chairs and its old long sign.
